Looks as if my Trinity email will have to suffice for a few days.
I'm slow getting off the mark, and I apologize.
Salvation: without having seen Ann Wolff's reply, I too would write that singing "Salvation is Created" brought the definition home to me. The lyrics tell me (and I buy into them) that salvation was created with Jesus' conception. From that point on, there would be nothing any of us could do about it except accept it. What an incredible gift! Salvation is our way to eternal life through Jesus. Jesus was the "carrier" of salvation from God to us. I most always think of salvation and grace as synonyms of sorts.

I am trying this from a blackberry. I would like to consider a question of who are the righteous that Luke talks about. Are they the individuals that don't see themselves as lost or sinners?

It's great to read your opening thoughts, Toby! Welcome to the conversation.

Thank you all for being patient in me connecting. I will be catching up this week.
My current understanding of salvation is that it is an eternal life with God which begins when we as individuals accept the gift of Grace which is given through Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. Unlike any other Faith, this gift is not one that can be earned. It can only be accepted. Accepting forgiveness for our sin is a humbling act which adds to our being unworthy for such a gift.
There's my start, time to learn.

I am in agreement with Walt, Ann and Lori's comments. Christ came to seek and to save those who are lost (Luke 19:10). He died for sinners, not for the righteious and his death on the cross is an unfathomable demonstration of His Love. Jesus died, rose from the dead, and lives today to bring Salvation to all who believe in HIm. I believe the only way a person can recognize God's gracious offer of salvation through the gospel of Jesus Christ is through the convicitng ministry of the Holy Spirit.

Hi Walt! Welcome to the conversation. Everyone, please note that the slide show for session 1 just contains the power point slides. I recorded an audio narration to go with it, but we are having some technical difficulties getting it to work on our website. So, you may want to wait for the full presentation. You can take a look at the slides now, if you like.

I guess when I try to describe or define salvation, I quickly end up describing Jesus. The concept of salvation to me means that we are salvaged. Our actions (and sinful nature) have earned us a spot in the rubbish pile for eternity, but thanks to Jesus' love and suffering and resurection we have been salvaged. We haven't earned the salvation, but we have received it anyway.

Before Jesus became human, and died and rose again, the only chance of salvation was by doing the things that please God so he would save us. Since there is no way a human being can do enough to earn this, we are fortunate to have a God who loves us so much that he allowed Jesus to suffer and die so that he could be raised to defeat satan and allow us to join God in Heaven for eternity.

Oh wow, I'm really surprised you haven't heard of it. It's not really a hymn, it's a choral piece of sacred music. The Trinity choir has sung it, I've heard the St. Olaf choir sing it. Do the rest of you know it? I looked it up on the internet and it's by a Russian composer, rather interesting.

Welcome to the discussion, Ann! I'll have to look up that hymn. It isn't one that I am familiar with. I had a professor in seminary that used to say if you want to know what people really believe, look at what music they enjoy. Thanks for sharing your reflections on salvation with the class:)

Hi Classmates,
This is really unusual, but when I hear salvation, I immediately think of the hymn "Salvation is Created" because when I was in high school (Stillwater) the choir (I was definitely not in it), under the direction of Denis Brown, ended every concert with it. It was sung at JFK's funeral. Denis was also the director of the choir here at Trinity and they sang this every Christmas. That music fills me with God's abundant grace and moves me to tears every time I hear it. So, I always think that salvation was created at Christmas, with Jesus' birth. But, going a step further, or maybe a step backwards, the theology of the Trinity as I understand it, is that Jesus is God. Jesus was always with God. Therefore, salvation was created at the time of creation. To me, that means salvation is for everyone. As humans, that gives us a rope that is a little too long. Most of us need more accountability and rules or guidelines. We have received that from time to time beginning in the Garden of Eden and perhaps ending with Jesus who made it real for us once and for all. What is salvation? To me it is being with God, or rather God with me, now and forever. Now I'm anxious to continue this study and learn what Siri has to teach because she always has such comprehensive information and practical, spiritual insight.

I believe that in recieving salvation we are being saved through Jesus Christ , that if we confess our sins we are saved for all eternity. Because of the pain and suffering that Jesus' suffered for us, we are givin forgiveness.
