Celebrating Seniors is a ministry to help people 75 years “young” and older in the Trinity community stay connected, have someone to talk to/listen and just be a friend. Many people are already very involved at Trinity and able to participate in a number of activities and may even feel they do not need a caring friend from this program. If so, a caring friend may just offer a friendly “hello,” or periodically check in with them to make sure they are doing well.
Others may be homebound with health problems, in a life transition, or going through a difficult time due to the loss of a loved one. Some may be contemplating a move into a retirement home or assisted care. Others may desire home communion or a visit from a pastor. Trinity does not want anyone to “fall through the cracks” when a regular telephone call, visit, or other kinds of assistance may be needed.
To accomplish this, people in the Trinity community who are 75 years and older are assigned to a caring friend as part of the Celebrating Seniors Program. Within a month of receiving a name, the caring friend will call to introduce her/himself and explain what may be expected from this connection. Caring friends are not professional counselors. They are not expected to provide transportation, loan money, do household chores, or help people move; but they are willing to provide a listening ear and assist in exploring resources to help with specific needs.
Many caring friends have been active with the Celebrating Seniors group for more than 10 years and several have participated for more than 20 years. In fact, some have already celebrated their seventy-fifth birthday and have their very own caring friend.
The caring friends group has been blessed with many friendships, not only within the group itself, but with new friendships formed within the congregation they might never have enjoyed if not involved with Celebrating Seniors.
We hope for many that Celebrating Seniors will be a way of discovering a new sense of being a part of the Trinity family and that through this ministry a new relationship can be found with a caring friend.
